Teen Girls with PTSD Benefit from Exposure Therapy

A form of exposure therapy — a specific type of psychotherapy used to treat certain anxiety disorders — has also been found to work for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in teenage girls who’ve been sexually abused. The new treatment approach employs a prolonged form of exposure therapy where patients revisit their trauma-related feelings and thoughts in a controlled environment and while employing relaxation skills. Despite a high prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescents, evidence-based treatments like prolonged exposure therapy for PTSD in this population have never been established.
