SAMHSA Announces 2012 Recovery Month Event Award Winners

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is pleased to acknowledge the efforts of those who planned and organized events for Recovery Month. SAMHSA selected three event award winners for their 2012 Recovery Month events. The 2012 winners showcase the inspiration, creativity, collaboration, and community-based activities that are the hallmarks of Recovery Month events. The 2012 Event Award winners are:

Rally and Walk/Run Event Category
Organization: Orchard Recovery Center
Title of Event: Rally for Recovery
On September 30th, 2012, the Rally for Recovery in Bowen Island, BC, was the first event of its kind in Canada, created after being inspired by the Recovery Month events happening in the U.S. They had only 6 weeks to execute it, and over 1,000 people attended. They used social media to promote the event, had media coverage at the event, and got sponsors such as the Drug Prevention Network of Canada. As a result of this event, 10 more cities in Canada will be having recovery events in 2013. They are now in the process of forming Canada’s first Recovery Advocacy Organization.

Educational Event Category
Organization: SMA Behavioral Healthcare Keep Kids Drug Free
Title of Event: Florida’s Ride for Recovery and Celebration Event
On September 22, 2012 Florida’s Ride for Recovery in Daytona Beach, FL continued its five year tradition of sheriff-escorted motorcycle rides that conclude with a celebration event at the Daytona Beach Bandshell. The celebration included testimonies of recovery, resource tables, line dancing, a Recovery’s Got Talent competition, well known artists, a run for recovery, and other activities for the community. Trainings were also provided on topics such as Medications in Addiction, Mental Health First Aid, and Media Messaging.

Special Celebrations Event Category
Organization: Addiction Treatment Services
Title: Guts: An Evening with Kristen Johnston
Addiction Treatment Services, a small organization in Traverse City, MI brought Emmy Award winner Kristen Johnston to the City Opera House to share her recovery story and read from her memoir on addiction and recovery, Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster. The organization kept costs low by offering to record the presentation, so that Ms. Johnston could use it to promote her book. They worked with a local filmmaker to film the event. They reached over 30,000 people through the event and social media.
